It’s Something Called a Rut

I also need to fix this page. I just noticed that the bottom of it show’s black…that’s not right. It’s not suppose to show black down there…displeased.
Rango is a fantastic animated film; those rare, usually only for Pixar to make, animated films that transcends generational lines and appeals to kids, and to adults (leaning towards pleasing the adults more than making the kids laugh). The animation is top notch, the voice acting is wonderful, and the dialogue is slick and the film itself is not afraid into going into weird territory. It doesn’t steer clear of the uncomfortable themes that come in spaghetti westerns. Not only ask, it tackles the theme of identity, of coming to terms with who you are without having a clear image. That theme of identity, of discovering your place, on your own, is the heart of the film, but it’s not my favorite part of the film. My favorite part of them was Bill Nighy, aka Rattlesnake Jake.

Though he comes late in the film, his entrance and presence is startling, almost frightening. He is uncompromising, proud, and his eyes harken back to Lord of The Rings Sauron (while being far more intimidating): brimstone and hell fire. He has the best lines (“Go to Hell” “WHERE DO YOU THINK I COME FROM?! Look into my eyes as I watch you die.”) , and is not a good guy, but he is a legend, a true legend and only admires those who can match to his ideal (which is why he utterly defeated and humiliates our star with just his words).
When I watched this film I thought of Jake as Satan incarnate (which is not hard to do considering his sudden entrance, his hellfire eyes, his slick and scary dialogue, his intense pride, and his only predator a hawk (angel imagery, heaven imagery, etc)). Jake easily preys and manipulates the weak and only backs down when he sees a glimmer of self assurance, of faith (in one self). Also considering his exit with the main villain, one could say that since Jake is Satan, and the main villain made a deal with Jake…the price to pay was his soul. Perhaps I’m looking too much into the film, and spoiling too much, but that’s what’s make this a great film.

This is my favorite film so far and I better see this as a contender in the Oscars. Pixar, be prepared to duel; Nickolodeon is gunning for you.
